What does electric power PE mean

Feb 14,2025

In the field of electricity and electrical engineering\ PE "usually stands for" Protecting Earthing ", which means" protective grounding "or" protective conductor ", also known as" ground wire ". PE wire is a conductor specifically used to ground the exposed conductive parts of electrical devices. Its function is to ensure that electrical equipment can safely conduct current to the ground in the event of a fault, thereby protecting the safety of personnel and equipment. The functions and characteristics of PE wire include:

1. Safety protection function: The PE wire connects the metal casing or other potentially electrified parts of electrical equipment to the ground. When the insulation inside the equipment is damaged and the casing becomes electrified, the PE wire can quickly direct the current to the ground, preventing personnel from getting electric shock.

2. Color regulation: In China, PE lines are usually marked with green yellow dual color lines for easy differentiation and identification.

3. Special purpose: PE wire is a dedicated grounding wire and must not be mixed with other lines (such as neutral wire N). Under normal operation of the equipment, there should be no working current passing through the PE line.

4. Repeated grounding: In a three-phase five wire grounding power supply system, the PE line needs to be repeatedly grounded to ensure the reliability and safety of the grounding system. Application scenarios of PE line:

PE wires are an essential component in household, industrial, and commercial electricity use.

Especially in places that require high safety, such as hospitals, chemical plants, etc., the setting and use of PE lines are more strict and standardized. Differences from other lines:

N line (neutral line): N line is the working neutral line, which is an important line in the power system used to transmit working current. Without N wires, the device will not function properly. But the N line does not directly participate in security protection.

PEN wire: In some systems, PEN wire has the function of both N wire and PE wire, that is, the neutral wire and protective wire are merged into one wire. However, the use of PEN wires requires special attention to their grounding and connection methods to ensure safety.

PE represents "protective grounding" or "protective conductor" in electricity use, which is commonly referred to as "ground wire". It plays a crucial role in the power system and is one of the important measures to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.
